Jamaican minister Aubyn Hill calls for renewable energy in real estate development

Jamaica’s Minister of Industry, Investment, and Commerce, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill, has urged homeowners and developers to embrace renewable energy solutions for sustainable development. 

Speaking at the recent REMAX Power Brokers Coffee Break Event held at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston, Senator Hill emphasized the importance of integrating renewable resources such as solar and wind energy into construction projects.

Integrating renewable energy into housing finance

Senator Hill proposed innovative financing strategies to facilitate the adoption of renewable energy technologies in the housing sector. 

He suggested that financial institutions could incorporate investments in renewables into mortgage agreements, making homeownership more affordable. 

By integrating renewable energy systems into properties, Senator Hill highlighted the potential for increased property value, leading to higher commissions for real estate brokers and greater confidence from mortgage lenders.

Government initiatives for affordable housing

Highlighting the government’s commitment to affordable housing, Senator Hill underscored initiatives by the National Housing Trust (NHT) to support homebuyers. 

He cited examples such as expanded loan options, including provisions for groups of individuals with familial ties to access substantial loans for housing purposes. 

Additionally, Senator Hill noted recent enhancements in loan limits for single applicants and contributors, aimed at facilitating home purchases and mortgage accessibility.
