BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The Texas Science Olympiad Competition is an interscholastic competition for students to learn and show off their scientific skills. The state competition was held at the Brazos County Expo Center on April 19 and 20.

“I tell my students all the time that I am very excited that [they] are going to be the doctors and the lawyers of my future,” said Kelli Stanford, 7th grade science teacher at Goodson Middle School. “They are going to be leading us in the future and I’m so so excited to see where they go from here.”

Students compete against other students in various science competitions, both teams-based and individually. Skills in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, and technology are put to the test in a tournament-style competition.

“Working with these students, I give them whatever wisdom I can and knowledge and what I know,” said Stanford. “But it’s through working together and through problem-solving all year long that when some kind of situation arises where we are kind of stuck, they take over. I’m just here facilitating.”

Each student can showcase the skills they learned throughout the year at the tournament.

Sarah Sanchez, an 8th grade Texas Science Olympiad Competition participant said students are excited to show off specific skills in the competition. Sanchez has been working on a plane all year to showcase her scientific skills at the Olympiad competition.

“I get to do something fun and school-related with my friends. It’s really important to me and I enjoy it,” said Lily Calarco, 8th grade Texas Science Olympiad Competition participant. “I want to be a dermatologist when I grow up, so I think it’s important that I get a chance to do something like this.”
