In an interview with the Foreign Policy media outlet, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba hinted that peace negotiations with Russia might commence once Ukraine establishes a peace coalition.

Switzerland is set to host a high-level peace conference next month. Responding to concerns about holding a peace summit without the war-initiating party, Kuleba highlighted two strategies to engage Russia in sincere dialogue.

“Your point is valid if you address the war that Russia launched against Ukraine with textbook diplomacy, because all textbooks that we learned from tell us that you need two parties to sit down and negotiate,” he told the Foreign Policy media.

Kuleba acknowledged the ineffectiveness of Ukraine’s extensive diplomatic efforts between 2014 and 2022, which included nearly 200 rounds of talks with Russia in various formats. “But nothing worked. It ended up in the large-scale invasion [of 2022],” he said.

“So, we know that it doesn't make sense to have Russia at the table if you cannot ensure that they act in good faith,” Kuleba added.

He outlined two prerequisites for genuine engagement with Russia: battlefield success and the formation of a coalition of like-minded countries.

“So, this is why the summit does not intend to have Russia as a participant,” Kuleba said.

The minister reported that the summit's objective is to unite countries sharing common principles, paving the way for coordinated actions. He said, “After that [creating the coalition], communication with Russia may take place and Russia can be part of the talks. Because you are right: in the end, you cannot put the war to an end without both parties.”

Russia Lacks 'Numbers' for Major Ukraine Breakthrough: NATO Commander

The NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe told journalists that he had been in very close contact with his Ukrainian colleagues, expressing confidence that they "will hold the line."

Some Russian media outlets and Ukrainian Telegram channels have misrepresented Kuleba's remarks, suggesting immediate peace talks after the Swiss conference.

However, according to Kuleba’s statement, while the conference aims to create a coalition, it’s uncertain if this outcome will be achieved during the event. He did not assert definitive negotiations post-conference, as the coalition's formation remains uncertain.

The Swiss government last week announced it would host a high-level peace conference for Ukraine in mid-June, but Russia would not attend it.

Moscow said holding the peace conference makes “no sense” unless Russia participates. Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated last week that any action on Ukraine that “ignores Russia’s position” was “detached from reality” and had “no perspective.”

The Kremlin has repeatedly said it will not participate in any negotiations unless Kyiv accepts Russia's annexation of the roughly 20 percent of Ukraine's territory it currently occupies.

Less than a week after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, peace talks commenced. Despite Putin’s bold claim of reaching Kyiv within three days, it quickly became evident that such a swift victory was unlikely. Thus, multiple rounds of negotiations ensued between Moscow, Kyiv, and other parties, offering a potential halt to the war at its outset.

Fast forward two years and little has changed in the entrenched positions of both sides. Each continues to view a military triumph over the other as the only viable path forward. With the military stalemate apparent, many argue that the time is ripe to reinitiate peace talks. Reports of clandestine discussions between US and Russian officials have surfaced, alongside public peace overtures from Ukraine itself and countries like China, the Vatican, Brazil, Mexico, and others.

I think you should have run your response by the troll farm editor first. Never good to lash out emotionally, without having someone calmer provide some rational oversight.

As it stands your response confirms:

1. For russians, that putler is okay with them living in poverty and without infrastructure and social services.
2. For Asians and Caucasians, that russians think they are "ugly".
3. For Mongolians, that russians think they are a "dead backward country".
4. That China can't take back russia because russians think it is not strong enough.
5. That the Baltic countries will be attacked next by russia.

So.....you've just alienated the few remaining 'Neutral' countries that putin was duplicitously sometimes pretending were friends. Fortunately they have long memories correctly informing them of the value of past russian 'friendship').

....And you have threatened NATO members, albeit actually thats a daily putin regime habit.

How low can a MRGA russian troll be demoted for incompetence before they are shown the 6th floor open window?

You're not listening Julia. Putin refuses to negotiate. He wants all of Ukraine, not just a piece, and if he can’t have it all then no one will; genicide. Peace talks have never worked once full on war has begun. Example:The twenty years between WWI and WWII was spent rearming and going at it again. Another example: Soviet Union dismantles and we have Glasnost. Western technology, manufacturing and dismantling Europes NATO. Russia thanks us for all the gifts and has used it to rebuild its military, especially submarines, aircraft, radar and missile technology. Now war has begun again and Russia wants all its satellite nations back and more of Europe. If peace talks were successful in Ukraine, Russia and Ukraine would use the peace time to rearm and plan another campaign. Ukraine could eventually join the EU and NATO. Russia will not let Ukraine join NATO without another war this one most assuredly tactical nukes will be fielded.

@S foreskin,

Meanwhile in the real world.....Russia is now the most heavily sanctioned nation in the world. Its latest military debacle again gutting its population (death and emigration) Its other civilian programs like healthcare, education, R&D, infrastructure improvements and pensions all similarly being depleted.

All bringing russia ever closer to another bankruptcy like in 1991, but this time with no international good will to help it muddle through that.

Most likely internal political chaos will ensue and civil wars erupt. Its a seemingly a pretty nihilistic and immoral people so I expect it will get pretty nasty for the folks there that would have wished to live a western style life.

Best case outcome for most russians at this point is its collapse that allows its currently colonized outer regions / distinct cultures to regain their sovereignty, and the remaining blocks get divided up amongst their former owners (China, Mongolia, Finland, Poland, Ukraine, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia...etc.....russian's can do no worse.

Did you miss the KyivPost opening banner MRGA's trolls?

Here's what the allied dollars contributed towards. Absolutely the best russian threat de-risking money ever spent.

Russian troops (....denazified): 470870

Russian tanks (....denazified): 7332

Russian artillery. (....denazified): 12044

Russian armored-vehicles (....denazified): 14096

Russian aircrafts. (....denazified): 348

Russian helicopters. (....denazified): 325

Russian ships. (....denazified): 26

We know losing soldiers is no big deal to russians...just expendable bullet fodder / road building fill after all.

Still, replacing those astounding military hardware losses to a heavily sanctioned, shrinking population, low productivity economy is going to cost a lot of pensioners their vodka and cabbage rations for many years.

Make sure you share this info with your troll friends :-)

Negotiating 20% of Ukraine 's territory with terrorist genocidal Russia is an obvious no-go... We've already witnessed the start of ethnic cleansing rape and assassination perpetrated by Russia... Nobody in his right mind could ever forgive what would happen if the West let this genocide take place under their auspices!! As well, this will only serve as a period of rearming and training for Russia...

@S foreskin,

I think there is another 'road of bones' like Russias Kolyma Highway, awaiting your valuable input. Minerals of use in concrete constitute 6% of a human body's elements. Literature indicates up to 1 million russian's contributed theirs to that road project.

Russia definitely needs more roads and less troll. They could offset the costs on new roads by making them 'troll roads'

I agree there is no point in inviting current russian leadership to any peace discussion. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba notes two prerequisites: Ukrainian battlefield success and a coalition to ensure Ukraines future protection. I do not believe this is enough.

However his subsequent statement hits the nail on the head: “So, we know that it doesn't make sense to have Russia at the table if you cannot ensure that they act in good faith,” Kuleba added.

Putin's regime has never acted in good faith. Behind any current russian leadership's fake smile and words they have always plotted against democratic allies. There has not been a year since KGB agent putin's tenure began that behind the scenes russia did not work to destabilize allied democracies. He regularly sends his assassins to murder residents in our nations, he medically impares our diplomates (Havana syndrome), He steals our intellectual property, he foments foreign coups designed to funnel refugees to our borders, he funds state enterprises to conduct cyber theft, IOT infrastructure shutdowns. He funds troll farms to spread falsehoods / hate, he falsely discredits opposition while funding MRGA aligned cronies like putinrump, orban, fico, wilder, le pen, salvini, erdogen, to destroy our democratic unity and freedoms.

Russia under current leadership should be treated as the gangster led state it is. As currently led, russia adds nothing of merit to any global discussion.
