MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The Wisconsin DNR is encouraging everyone to celebrate Arbor Day Friday by planting a tree and understanding its value.

Arbor Day is an annual observance that promotes tree planting and care. It has been celebrated on the last Friday of April since 1883.

According to the Wisconsin DNR, the day also marks the end of Forest Appreciation Week.

The Wisconsin DNR says 17 million acres of forests covers nearly half of Wisconsin and the millions of urban trees provide wildlife habitat while supporting recreation opportunities and human health.
